Lo Stato delle Due Sicilie fu il primo al mondo a far navigare per mare una nave a vapore.
La nave, con caldaia inglese, era il Ferdinando I, varato il 24 giugno 1818.
In Inghilterra il primo battello a vapore per la navigazione sui mari fu varato nel 1822: il rimorchiatore Monkey.
