Ecco come Wikipedia esordisce su Carlo Goldoni…
Goldoni è considerato uno dei padri della commedia moderna e deve parte della sua fama anche alle opere in dialetto veneziano.

Nacque a Venezia il 25 febbraio 1707, da una famiglia borghese di origini modenesi (città da cui provenivano i nonni paterni).
Trovatosi in difficoltà finanziarie in seguito agli sperperi del nonno paterno Carlo, il padre Giulio si trasferì a Roma per studiare medicina, lasciandolo con la madre Margherita Salvioni.
Pare non fosse riuscito a conseguire la licenza di medico, ma divenne comunque farmacista; esercitò la professione a Perugia, richiamando a sé tutta la famiglia.
Il Goldoni si formò dapprima con un precettore, quindi fu in collegio, presso i gesuiti a Perugia e poi presso i domenicani di Rimini, infine ancora con un insegnante privato, il domenicano Candini.
Di questo periodo è noto l'episodio della fuga da Rimini a Chioggia (dove nel frattempo si erano trasferiti i genitori) al seguito di una compagnia di comici.
Tornato con la madre a Venezia nel 1721, fece praticantato presso lo studio legale dello zio Giampaolo Indric. Nel 1723 passò al collegio Ghisleri di Pavia grazie a una borsa di studio offerta dal marchese Pietro Goldoni Vidoni, protettore della famiglia, ma vi venne espulso prima di concludere il terzo anno per essere l'autore di un'opera satirica.
Fu poi a Udine e a Vipacco al seguito del padre, medico del conte Francesco Antonio Lantieri.
Ebbe così inizio un periodo piuttosto avventuroso della sua vita e, dopo aver ancora seguito il padre il Friuli, Slovenia e Tirolo, riprese gli studi a Modena.
A Feltre elaborò le prime opere comiche, ancora in forma dilettantesca (Il buon padre e La cantatrice).
La passione per il teatro caratterizzò la sua inquieta esistenza.
Con l'improvvisa morte del padre nel 1731, si dovette prendere carico della famiglia; tornato a Venezia, tentò inizialmente di completare gli studi presso il collegio Ghislieri di Pavia: venne tuttavia espulso, a causa di alcuni versi poco encomiastici scritti per alcune fanciulle per bene della città.
Completò quindi gli studi a Padova, ed intraprese la carriera forense.
Nel 1734 incontrò a Verona il capocomico Giuseppe Imer e con lui tornò a Venezia dopo aver ottenuto l'incarico di scrivere testi per il teatro San Samuele, di proprietà Grimani.
In questo periodo nacquero le prime tragicommedie scritte dal neo-avvocato per questa compagnia a partire da Il Belisario del 1734 fino al Giustino del 1738.
Seguendo a Genova la compagnia Imer, conobbe e sposò Nicoletta Conio.
Con lei Goldoni tornò a Venezia.
Nel 1738 Goldoni diede al teatro San Samuele la sua prima vera commedia, il Momolo cortesan, con la parte del protagonista interamente scritta.
A Venezia, dopo la stesura della sua prima commedia interamente scritta, La donna di garbo (1742-43), fu costretto a fuggire a causa dei debiti.
Continuò a lavorare nel teatro durante la guerra di successione austriaca curando gli spettacoli di Rimini occupata dagli austriaci; poi soggiornò in Toscana.
Goldoni non aveva abbandonato i contatti con il mondo teatrale: fu convinto dal capocomico Girolamo Medebach a sottoscrivere un contratto come scrittore per la propria compagnia che recitava a Venezia al teatro Sant'Angelo.
Nel 1748 torna a Venezia e fino al 1753 scrive per la compagnia Medebach una serie di commedie, in cui, distaccandosi dai modelli della commedia dell'arte, realizza i principi di una "riforma" del teatro.
A questo periodo appartengono L'uomo prudente, La vedova scaltra, La putta onorata, Il cavaliere e la dama, La buona moglie, La famiglia dell'antiquario e L'erede fortunata: qui, tranne nell'ultima, emergono le polemiche sulla novità del teatro goldoniano e la rivalità con l'abate Pietro Chiari, che lavora per il teatro San Samuele.
Realizza inoltre sedici commedie, tra cui Il teatro comico, La bottega del caffè, Il bugiardo, La Pamela, tratta dal romanzo di Samuel Richardson, Il giuocatore, La dama prudente, L'avventuriero onorato, I pettegolezzi delle donne.
L'attività per il Medebach continuò poi con Il Molière, L'amante militare, Il feudatario, La serva amorosa, fino a La locandiera e a Le donne curiose.
Dopo aver rotto con il Medebach, Goldoni assume un nuovo impegno nel 1753 con il teatro San Luca, di proprietà Vendramin. Comincia quindi un periodo travagliato in cui Goldoni scrive varie tragicommedie e commedie.
Deve adattare i propri testi innanzitutto per un edificio teatrale ed un palcoscenico più grandi di quelli a cui era abituato, e per attori che non conoscevano il suo stile, lontano dai modelli della commedia dell'arte: fra le tragicommedie ebbe un gran successo la Trilogia persiana; tra le commedie si possono ricordare La cameriera brillante, Il filosofo inglese, Terenzio, Torquato Tasso ed il capolavoro Il campiello.
Tornato a Venezia, ebbe dei grandi risultati artistici con Gli innamorati, commedia in italiano e in prosa, con I rusteghi, in veneziano e in prosa e con La casa nova e La buona madre.
Nel 1761 Goldoni fu invitato a recarsi a Parigi per occuparsi della Comédie Italienne. V
itale fu l'ultima stagione per il Teatro San Luca, prima della partenza, ove produsse La trilogia della villeggiatura, Sior Todero brontolon, Le baruffe chiozzotte e Una delle ultime sere di carnovale.
Giunto a Parigi nel 1762, Goldoni aderì subito alla politica francese, dovendo anche affrontare varie difficoltà a causa dello scarso spazio concesso alla Commedia Italiana e per le richieste del pubblico francese, che identificava il teatro italiano con quella commedia dell'arte da cui Goldoni si era tanto allontanato.
Goldoni riprese una battaglia di riforma: la sua produzione presentava testi destinati alle scene parigine e a quelle veneziane.
Goldoni insegnò l'italiano alla famiglia reale, alle figlie del re di Francia Luigi XV a Versailles e nel 1769 ebbe una pensione di corte.
Tra il 1784 e l'87 scrisse in francese la sua autobiografia, Mémoires.
La rivoluzione francese sconvolse la sua vita e, con la soppressione delle pensioni, in quanto concesse dal re, morì in miseria il 6 febbraio 1793, 19 giorni prima di compiere 86 anni.
Le sue ossa sono andate disperse.
