Secondo la tradizione, fu l'Evangelista Marco ad iniziare la conversione al Cristianesimo delle città della X Regio Venetia et Histria nel primo secolo d.C., fondando quello che doveva divenire il Patriarcato di Aquileia.
Narra la leggenda che sulla via del ritorno da Aquileia, una violenta tempesta sospinse la sua nave nella Laguna Veneta, facendola incagliare sui lidi delle isole ancora disabitate di Rialto.
Scampato alla tempesta, l'evangelista scese a terra, si coricò presso la riva e si addormentò.
Gli apparve in sogno un angelo del Signore, che gli disse: "Pax Tibi, Marce, Evangelista Meus, hic requiescet corpus tuum …".
Questa profezia si ritenne avverata quando nell'828, Bon da Malamocco e Rustego da Torcello riuscirono a trafugare il corpo del Santo sepolto ad Alessandrio d'Egitto, ormai terra d'infedeli.
Ebbe così inizio un legame fortissimo fra i veneti e San Marco, ancora oggi estremamente sentito.
Non appena il corpo dell'Evangelista giunse a Venezia, San Marco fu adottato come protettore della Repubblica Veneta che stava iniziando a far valere la propria autonomia rispetto all'Impero Bizantino; non è un caso che il nuovo protettore vada a sostituire quel San Teodoro, greco, che sarebbe stato imposto da Narsete, generale bizantino.
San Marco divenne non solo protettore ma anche sovrano della città e dello stato: il doge derivava la sua autorità direttamente da san Marco, rendendo superflua qualunque investitura imperiale.
L'evangelista comincia a comparire sui vessilli veneti a partire dal XII secolo (la prima citazione è del 1177), inizialmente riportando l'immagine del santo e quindi, a partire dal '300, sostituendolo con il suo simbolo, il Leone alato.
Questi veniva riportato in varie fogge, col tempo si impose la positura araldica del leone passante per la bandiera, mentre sugli stemmi e i sigilli compariva normalmente in posizione di fronte e accovacciato, tradizionalmente detto "in mołeca", dal nome veneto del granchio nella fase in cui cambia il guscio.
Quanto ai colori, inizialmente sugli stendardi compariva il leone rosso in campo bianco, successivamnete si consolidò l'uso del leone d'oro in campo rosso (cremisi o rosso veneziano).
Per gli stemmi si utilizzava normalmente il campo d'azzurro.
Da notare che l'azzurro è da tempi antichissimi un colore associato ai veneti, tanto che in latino venetus era sinonimo di azzurro; azzurro era il colore delle fanterie venete.
